ABOUT.

Cal Monaghan

Cal Monaghan is a tea-fuelled apology monster, poet and writer from West Yorkshire.

Hi, I’m Cal.

I studied Creative Writing at Liverpool John Moores’ University (LJMU) between 2011 and 2014 and my short stories and poems have (occasionally) appeared in local publications and online.

I’m working on my first novel, ‘Wolf on the Fold’, and have been for a while now. I’m also usually working on a collection of short stories and poems, and I keep a reading/review diary on my @drystonewords Instagram page.

In my spare time, I’m a passionate and experienced Internal Communications Manager for the Health and Safety Executive, part of the UK Civil Service. If you let me, I’ll tell you all about the amazing people I work with and how we’re working hard to be a positive influence in people’s lives.

You can get in touch with me on Twitter at @communicalmon, by following me on Instagram or by filling in the little form (told you I was a civil servant) on the CONTACT. page.

While, I’m here, what is DRYSTONE?

A few years ago, I was at my best friend’s sister wedding. After a few beers, we got chatting about our lives (as you do) and who/where we’d like to be in future.

I got onto DRYSTONE, an idea I’d had for a small bookshop, dedicated to speculative fiction (sci-fi/fantasy, all that good stuff) that’d be some kind tea-room-library-Forbidden-Planet-Waterstones hybrid. Where people could come in, get a cuppa and a cake and just natter about the latest things they’d been reading. The conversation and beer continued, until the idea got wrapped up in us all chanting ‘DRYSTONE’ at each other as the DJ closed the night out with ‘Mr Brightside.’

Now, sometime later, I’m still probably not the small-business-owner type of guy. But this little blog, the little reviews and content that I occasionally post is my way of bringing that idea to life.

So, while you can’t join me to chat about the latest sci-fi reads or comics you’ve read in a gorgeous glass-fronted café on Liverpool’s Bold Street, surrounded by dark wood bookshelves and Star Trek memorabilia, you can follow me here (and on Twitter and Insta) and chat to me in the comments.
